The Fellowship of Vocation (FOV) is the Diocese of Cape Town’s discernment process for those sensing a call to ministry.
This is not simply an application for ordination, but a sacred journey of prayer, reflection, and testing of vocation.
Through the FOV, enquirers are invited to explore their sense of calling in community — guided by their parish priest, supported by the diocese, and accompanied by others on a similar journey.
The process helps individuals discern whether God may be calling them into ordained ministry or into other forms of service and leadership within the Church.

How to Get Started
The FOV Journey (Step-by-Step)
Broken into 4 clear steps:
Step 1: Parish Priest Registration
- The enquirer begins by speaking with their parish priest.
- The priest completes Part 1 of the FOV Registration Form, affirming the enquirer’s involvement in parish life.
- The priest commits to journeying with the enquirer in prayer and guidance.
Step 2: Enquirer Acknowledgment
- Once the priest has registered the enquirer, the enquirer receives an email with a link to Part 2 of the FOV Registration Form.
- The enquirer acknowledges their commitment to the discernment process, understanding that it is a journey of testing and not a guarantee of ordination.
Step 3: Diocesan Discernment
- The diocesan team reviews the completed registration.
- Enquirers are invited into the FOV programme of formation, reflection, and growth.
- Priests and enquirers remain accountable to diocesan structures throughout the process.
Step 4: Vocational Guidance conference(VGC)
- Candidates present themselves for the Church’s discernment for ordination (Priest or Deacon).
- The conference is preceded by panel interviews and a psychological assessment.
- It takes place during the octave of the Feast of Robert and Sophia Gray, marking a key moment of discernment.
