The Fellowship of St Monica

The Diaconate in the Diocese of Cape Town

The Fellowship of St Monica is our expression of the distinctive diaconate in our Diocese. Grounded in the Anglican Ordinal and the charge given to deacons “to interpret to the Church the needs, concerns and hopes of the world,” the Fellowship seeks to form and deploy self-supporting deacons who serve both Church and community.

Distinctive deacons are ordained to a lifelong ministry of service, justice, pastoral care, and proclamation. They work under the authority of the Bishop and may be deployed in parishes, chaplaincy contexts, and community settings where particular pastoral and social needs are present. In this way, the diaconate strengthens the Church’s mission by building bridges between the liturgy of the Church and the life of the world.

Those discerning this vocation undertake a dedicated process of prayerful discernment together with a two-year Certificate in Ministry designed specifically for the diaconate.

This is a self-supporting ministry.

If you sense a call to serve God through a ministry of compassionate presence, social engagement, and faithful witness, we invite you to explore this vocation further. Please contact the TEFT department for more info
